The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
