Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Triggered the Dispute
The video footage, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who previously served in defense or defense positions.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to safeguard and defend this national charter," the officials affirmed in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from abroad, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the law or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Incensed Response
The video message reportedly provoke a furious response from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This constitutes really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats published a combined statement censuring the comments.
"Political violence has no place in America," they stated. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our nation with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful threats of violence against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme digital publications and recant his violent language before he leads to violence," the announcement added.
Officials' Strong Reaction
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also published a statement.
"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who value this country and made an pledge to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that fundamental responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it punishable by execution for us to reiterate the statutes," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they carry out their oath to the national charter and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "Every American must join forces and denounce the former president's calls for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Comments
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the death of elected officials."
He added: "This is an clear THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation â regardless of party â should censure this right away and without qualification."
The GOP leader supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", labeling the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of the legislature telling troops to disobey orders, I think that is without precedent in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and decide all that."
White House Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Does the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the representative said. "There are current representatives of the federal government who conspired to orchestrate a video message to personnel of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our armed forces relies on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can cause casualties, it can result in disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
